How Door Swing Works

You have two choices for how your door swings:

Inswing vs. Outswing — Most homeowners choose inswing, where the door opens toward the interior of the home. We can also build jambs for outswing doors that open toward the exterior — this is typical for commercial applications, or whenever your project requires it.

Left-Hand vs. Right-Hand — The layout of your installation site determines this. To figure out which you need, imagine standing on the street looking at the door. If the pivot point (the hinge side) is on the left, you need a left-hand swing. If the pivot point is on the right, you need a right-hand swing.

    Which Way Does It Swing?

Inswing or outswing: most homes choose inswing, where the door opens into the house. You push it open from outside and pull it open from inside. Outswing is the reverse, and is typical for commercial projects or wherever your site calls for it.

Left or right hand: stand on the street looking at the door. If the hinges are on the left, it's a left-hand door. If they're on the right, it's a right-hand door.

    Quiet, Damped Stainless Steel Hinges

The door opens smoothly and closes softly, with no slam and no squeak.

    Soft, Silent Closing

A built-in damper slows the door as it closes, so it settles quietly instead of slamming.

    Stainless Steel, Precision Made

Forged and precision-cast stainless steel, built to carry a heavy door without sagging.

    No Squeak, No Sag

Ordinary hinges can squeak and let a door drop over time. These are made to stay quiet and keep the door true.

    Tested For Daily Use

Cycle-tested at the factory for years of opening and closing without bending or damage.

Hardware varies by model; our team confirms every build with you.

    Inside the panel

Built On An Aluminum Honeycomb Core

Between the door's two aluminum skins sits a honeycomb of thin aluminum cells. Mostly air, so a big panel stays light. A web of linked cells, so it stays rigid and flat.

    Safety

    Flame Retardant & Moisture-Proof

Aluminum is a non-combustible material, and the honeycomb won't soak up water, swell or rot.

    Durability

    Strong Corrosion Resistance

The honeycomb's surface is treated with an epoxy coating, and it's salt-spray tested at the factory for pinholes, cracks and blisters.

    Environment

    Health & Environmental Protection

Pure aluminum gives off no harmful gases and can be fully recycled.

    Handling

    Light & Easy To Handle

Mostly air inside, so even an oversized panel is lighter to ship, carry and hang.

Core construction can vary by model; our team confirms every build with you.

    Inside the frame

A Frame Built To Seal, Insulate And Hold

Cut the frame open: sealed chambers, a thermal break, layered seals and insulating fill, all in heavy-wall aluminum. Tap a dot to see what it is.

    Engineered inside

Built Smarter Inside, Made For Everyday Luxury

Seals, hardware and locking are engineered together, so the door feels as good to use as it looks.

    Sealed Door Fitting System

Sealing strips made from the same kind of material used on premium cars, around an aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel. Together they help keep out moisture, hold in heat, resist fire and stand up to knocks.

    Integrated Hardware System

Hardware from established makers is designed into the door from the start, not added after. Clean lines, nothing cluttered, and a finish that plays with light and shadow.

    Anti-Pry Lock Technology

The lock uses a custom rotating hook bolt. If the lock cylinder is attacked, the hook turns to block and bite deep into the frame, so the door holds.

    Private Customization

Our design team works with you on size, finish, glass and hardware to build a door that suits your home's materials and style.

The Swing Entry Door Buying Guide

Three things to get right before you order. Read them once and your door arrives sized, handed and set up for your opening.

    Measure Once. Order Right.

Two numbers matter. Your rough opening is the framed hole in the wall, measured stud to stud and floor to header. Your frame size is the outside of the door frame, and that's the width and height you enter in the configurator.

INSIDE ROUGH OPENING · 48½″ FRAME SIZE · 48″ · ENTER THIS JAMB DEPTH · 4⅝″ DRYWALL STUD INTERIOR CASING SIDING EXTERIOR CASING JAMB HINGE DOOR OUTSIDE

Example for reference only. Sizes shown are a sample 48″ door in a typical 2×4 wall. Every Gladiator door is built to your measurements, so your numbers will be different.

    Rule of thumb

Order a frame about ½″ smaller than the rough opening in width and height. That leaves room to shim, square and level the door.

    Example

    Rough opening 48½″ × 96½″ → enter 48″ × 96″ in the configurator.

    Adding sidelights?

Size the rough opening for the whole unit: door plus sidelights plus transom. See Sidelights below.

How A Unit With Sidelights Adds Up

Frame your door in glass with a sidelight on the left, the right or both, each up to 48″ wide, plus a transom up to 48″ tall. Sidelights don't have to match. The overall unit is every frame width added together, so size your rough opening for the total.

    Door Only48″ × 96″ door alone
    Door + Transom96″ + 18″ = 114″ tall
    One Sidelight18″ + 48″ = 66″ wide
    Two Sidelights18″ + 48″ + 18″ = 84″ wide
    One Sidelight + Transom66″ wide × 114″ tall
    Two Sidelights + Transom84″ wide × 114″ tall

Drawn to the same scale. Examples use a 48″ × 96″ door with 18″ sidelights and an 18″ transom. Your sizes will be different.

    Mix and match

Sidelights don't have to match. Each one can be up to 48″ wide, and a transom up to 48″ tall.

    Rough opening

Size the rough opening for the whole unit, about ½″ bigger than the overall width and height.

    Preview the layout

Pick sidelights or a transom in the configurator above to see a sample drawing of that layout with the sizes you enter. It’s a reference only; our team confirms every build with you.

    Questions

    Swing Entry Door FAQ

Swing or pivot: which should I choose?
Both come in the same designs, sizes and finishes. A swing door hangs on hinges at the side jamb and the whole door opens one way, the way a front door usually works. A pivot door turns on a pivot set in from the jamb for a bolder, gallery-style entrance. See the two side by side.
Is every design available as a swing door?
Yes. Every Gladiator entry door design is available as a swing entry door or as a pivot door. See the pivot versions.
What size should my rough opening be?
Measure the framed opening stud to stud and floor to header, then order a frame about ½″ smaller in width and height so the installer can shim, square and level the door. For example, a 48½″ × 96½″ rough opening takes a 48″ × 96″ frame. If you add sidelights or a transom, size the opening for the whole unit.
What jamb depth do I need?
Match the jamb to your finished wall thickness. A typical 2×4 wall is about 4⅝″ (our standard) and a typical 2×6 wall about 6⅝″. You can set any depth from 4⅝″ to 8″ in ⅛″ steps in the configurator.
    What sizes can I order?
Door width from 48″ to 86″, door height from 80″ to 144″, and jamb depth from 4⅝″ to 8″ in ⅛″ steps. Sidelights can be added up to 48″ wide on either side, and a transom up to 48″ tall.
Is the wood-grain finish real wood?
No. It's a factory-applied wood-grain finish that gives you the look of timber. The door arrives finished, so there's nothing to stain or seal.
Can the door open in or out?
Yes. Choose left-hand or right-hand, inswing or outswing, in the Swing Configuration step of the configurator. Stand on the street looking at the door: if the hinges are on the left, it's a left-hand door.
    How do I order?
Configure your door at the top of this page, then tap Contact Us To Get Build Info and send us your details. A Gladiator specialist will call you to confirm your measurements, finish and swing and answer your questions before your order is placed. You can also print your build sheet to share with your contractor. Contact us with any questions first.
