How Door Swing Works
\n
You have two choices for how your door swings:
\n
Inswing vs. Outswing — Most homeowners choose inswing, where the door opens toward the interior of the home. We can also build jambs for outswing doors that open toward the exterior — this is typical for commercial applications, or whenever your project requires it.
\n
Left-Hand vs. Right-Hand — The layout of your installation site determines this. To figure out which you need, imagine standing on the street looking at the door. If the pivot point (the hinge side) is on the left, you need a left-hand swing. If the pivot point is on the right, you need a right-hand swing.

Understanding Pivot Placement
\n
The pivot placement is the distance from the vertical edge of your rough opening to the pivot pin. As a rule of thumb, we suggest placing the pivot at roughly one quarter of the door width — this presents a solid aesthetic for most door dimensions.

The diagram below shows two common placements at a 48\" net frame width: a 6\" offset pivot (Config A) and a 9\" balanced pivot (Config B). The recommendation table at the bottom shows our suggested pivot position for every door slab width.

\n Important — minimum passthrough: Always ensure at least a 36\" clear passthrough opening. The math is: Rough Opening Width − Pivot Placement − 4\" (jamb) = passthrough. Example: a 48\" rough opening with a 9\" pivot placement gives roughly a 35\" passthrough — borderline. A 6\" pivot placement gives roughly 38\". When in doubt, contact us.\n

Sidelight placement is always specified from the exterior view. For example, to add a 12\" sidelight on the right side as you face the door from outside, enter 12\" in the Right Sidelight field below. To build a double sidelight unit, enter a width under both the Left and Right Sidelight fields — the two sidelights do not need to be the same size.

Net Sidelight Size

The size you enter is the net jamb size — the actual finished frame width. Your rough opening should be at least 1/2\" larger than the net size on each side to allow room to square and level the unit during installation.

\n Example: A 48\" × 98\" door paired with an 18\" × 98\" sidelight gives you a finished combo of 66\" × 98\". The rough opening should be approximately 66 1/2\" × 98 1/2\".\n
