Low-E Glass Explained: How It Cuts Cooling Costs

What is low-E glass, and how does it work?

Low-E glass is standard float glass coated with an ultra-thin, virtually invisible metallic oxide layer that reflects infrared heat while allowing visible light to pass through freely. The "E" stands for emissivity — a measure of how readily a surface radiates heat energy. A lower emissivity number means less heat transfer, which translates directly into a cooler interior and a lighter load on your air conditioning system.

The coating is applied either during manufacturing (hard-coat, or pyrolytic) or in a controlled vacuum process after the glass is formed (soft-coat, or sputter-coat). Soft-coat low-E is more common in high-performance architectural glazing today because it achieves significantly lower emissivity values — typically 0.02 to 0.04 compared with untreated glass at around 0.84. That gap is enormous in practice: soft-coat low-E glass can block up to 70% of solar heat gain while still transmitting 60–75% of visible daylight.

Why does low-E glass matter more in Florida than almost anywhere else?

In a hot, sun-intense climate like Jacksonville and the rest of Florida, solar heat gain through glass is the single largest driver of residential and commercial cooling loads. What is Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and how does it relate to low-E?

SHGC is the fraction of solar radiation that enters a building through a window or door — it runs from 0 (no heat in) to 1 (all heat in). Low-E coatings are the primary tool for reducing SHGC without darkening the glass or adding tint. A well-specified soft-coat low-E unit on a thermally broken aluminum frame can achieve SHGC values of 0.22–0.27 while maintaining a visible light transmittance (VT) of 60% or higher, giving you bright, open rooms that stay comfortable without running the AC constantly.

Two numbers you should always ask for when specifying any glazed opening:

Studies by the U.S. Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory consistently show that upgrading from clear single-pane glass to a high-performance low-E insulating unit reduces cooling energy use by 25–40% in hot-climate states, with Florida homes near the upper end of that range due to year-round cooling demand.   • Historic preservation projects: Some jurisdictions restrict glass replacement options. Verify local requirements before specifying.
