Getting the rough opening (RO) right is the single most critical step before ordering any large-format door system. An opening that is too tight forces costly field modifications; one that is too loose compromises the sill seal and structural transfer. What Is a Rough Opening and Why Does It Matter for Sliding and Bifold Doors?

A rough opening (RO) is the framed structural hole — width between king/trimmer studs and height from sub-floor to underside of header — into which the door frame is set. For large-format sliding and bifold systems, the RO must account for the door frame itself, shim space, sill pan slope, and any substrate the frame fastens through. What Tools Do You Need Before You Start Measuring?

Gather these before touching a tape measure:

  • 25 ft or longer steel tape measure (fabric tapes stretch — do not use them)
  • 4 ft or 6 ft level (to confirm plumb jambs and level sill)
  • Laser distance meter (recommended for openings wider than 12 ft)
  • Pencil and measurement sheet (record every reading; do not rely on memory)
  • Plumb bob or digital level app as a secondary check
  • Moisture meter (wood-frame openings — confirm sub-sill moisture <19% before ordering)

How Do You Measure Rough Opening Width Correctly?

Measure the width at three heights — bottom, middle, and top of the opening — and use the smallest measurement as your governing dimension.

  1. Clear the opening. Remove any temporary bracing, protruding fasteners, or sheathing that intrudes into the RO plane.
  2. Measure bottom width. Hook the tape on the inside face of the left trimmer stud; pull to the inside face of the right trimmer stud at sill height. Record.
  3. Measure mid-span width. Repeat at the midpoint of the opening height. Timber-frame walls often bow here — this reading catches it.
  4. Measure top width. Repeat just below the header. Record.
  5. Use the minimum. Your order width is based on the smallest of the three readings, minus the shim allowance (see tolerance table below).
  6. Check for plumb. Hold your level against each trimmer stud face. Note any out-of-plumb measurement in mm; factor this into shim space.

Pro tip: For bi-fold door systems spanning 16 ft or wider, take a fourth reading diagonally corner-to-corner in both directions. If the two diagonal measurements differ by more than ¼ in (6 mm), the opening is not square and must be corrected before the unit arrives on site.

How Do You Measure Rough Opening Height Correctly?

Measure height at three points — left side, center, and right side — and use the smallest reading as your governing height.

  1. Establish your finished floor reference. If finished flooring (tile, hardwood, concrete topping) has not yet been installed, add its thickness to every height reading. Gladiator sill tracks sit on the finished floor, not the sub-floor.
  2. Measure left height. From finished-floor level to the underside of the header at the left trimmer stud. Record.
  3. Measure center height. From finished floor to the underside of the header at the center of the span. Headers can sag — this reading is critical on spans over 10 ft.
  4. Measure right height. Repeat on the right trimmer stud. Record.
  5. Use the minimum. Your order height is based on the smallest reading, minus shim allowance.
  6. Confirm level sill. Place your 4 ft level on the sub-sill across the full width. Any slope exceeding ⅛ in per 4 ft must be corrected with a pressure-treated shim plate before installation. What Are the Correct Rough Opening Tolerances for Gladiator Sliding and Bifold Doors?

Standard Gladiator aluminum door frames require the following clearances between the rough opening and the outside of the door frame. These figures apply to both sliding and bi-fold systems unless a project-specific shop drawing states otherwise.

How to calculate your order size from RO measurements:

  • Door unit width = RO width (minimum of three readings) minus 1 in total (½ in each side)
  • Door unit height = RO height (minimum of three readings) minus ½ in at head (sill sits flush on finished floor)

Example: RO width readings are 143¾ in, 143½ in, 143⅝ in. Minimum = 143½ in. Order width = 143½ − 1 = 142½ in (11 ft 10½ in).

How Do Measurements Differ Between Sliding and Bifold Door Systems?

The measurement protocol above applies to both systems, but bifold doors have two additional critical checks that sliding doors do not.

For bi-fold systems specifically: count your panel configuration before ordering. A 6-panel bi-fold stacking left on a 24 ft opening needs a clear wall return of at least 24 in on the stack side. Measure that wall return depth before submitting your order — it cannot be field-modified after manufacturing.

What Are the Most Common Measuring Errors Contractors Make?

These are the mistakes our technical team sees most frequently — and every one of them can be avoided with a disciplined pre-order checklist.

  • Measuring to the sheathing, not the trimmer stud face. The door frame fastens to the structural trimmer, not the sheathing or wrap. Always measure from stud face to stud face.
  • Ignoring finished floor thickness. On a slab with a 1¼ in tile-and-mortar bed, ordering based on raw slab height produces a unit that is 1¼ in too tall. Confirm floor buildup with the flooring sub before submitting measurements.
  • Using only one width reading. A single measurement at mid-span misses bowed or tapered openings. Always take all three and use the minimum.
  • Forgetting the stack pocket. On sliding doors, panels stack to one or both sides. If cabinetry, a column, or a structural wall is within the stack travel zone, the door cannot open fully. Note the stack direction and verify clearance before ordering.
  • Ordering to nominal stud spacing. A "16 ft" rough opening in the plans is often 15 ft 10½ in as built. Always field-verify; never order from plans alone.
  • Not accounting for out-of-square on large bi-fold spans. On a 20–32 ft bifold opening, even ⅜ in of racking creates a diagonal gap at the corner panels. This cannot be shimmed out — the framing must be corrected.
  • Missing the sill slope. Exterior sill pans must slope away from the building at ⅛ in per foot minimum for drainage. If the RO sill is not sloped at framing, the installer must build up with a sloped pressure-treated plate. Do not assume the factory track provides slope — it does not.
